Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary
The Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary lies close to the ancient cultural capital of Thrissur in Kerala. The Park has more than 25 species of animals, and many more of birds and reptiles. The Park covers acres of tropical forests spread over hilly terrain. The Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary is home to many kinds of plants, like teak, rosewood and other hardwoods. Another attraction at the Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary is the many kinds of rare orchids, enchanting the visitor with their exotic shapes and colors. The dam inside the Park has created an artificial lake that is home to many kinds of animals and plants.
The animals at the Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary include tigers, leopards, bison, bears and fox. The grasslands and marshes are an ideal place to spot deer like the swamp deer, mouse deer, barking deer and elk. Watch the animals at dusk as they come to quench their thirst at the Peechy reservoir at dusk, or listen to the shrill twittering of the birds in the many little nooks and crannies they love to roost in.
The Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary's birds are as delightful as their four legged neighbors. The marsh harriers and wagtails are some of the birds that live off the marsh creatures found in the catchment area. The black stork, a rare bird, is known for its graceful steps as it wades into the lake to catch a fish. The sand plovers, sand pipers, masked booby and sparrow hawks are all foreign visitors come to the Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary in search of warmer climes. The indigenous birds at the Peechy Wildlife Sanctuary include jungle fowl, woodpeckers, mynah and thrush.
