Eravikulam National Park
The Eravikulam National Park was established in 1975 to protect the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. The Park lies just 15 kilometers from the picturesque backwaters of Munnar. Covering an area of 97 square kilometers, the Park is a land of many delights, with lush green mountain slopes and bubbling brooks complementing the misty lakes and grasslands spread across the park. The Park is also the site of the Anamudi Peak, which, at 2694 meters above sea level, is the highest non-Himalayan peak in India.
The vegetation of the Eravikulam National Park comprises flat savannah type grasslands and tall pith reeds, locally known as "shola". The shola forests of the Eravikulam National Park is one of the most unique features of the Eravikulam National Park, with clumps of these tall reeds being dense enough to hide tigers and leopards.
The wild denizens of the Eravikulam National Park include tigers, panthers, dholes and civet cats that frequent the grasslands and shola forests. The boundaries of the savannahs and forests are ideal for wild boars and sloth bear, as well as primates like langurs. The Eravikulam National Park is also home to the Atlas Moth, the largest moth in the world. Another attraction at the Park is the endangered Nilgiri Tahr, found only in the Nilgiri Hill ranges. The Eravikulam National Park is also home to the many kinds of birds and reptiles. The wide grasslands are ideal nesting places for snakes.
At the Eravikulam National Park, you will come across many kinds of birds and animals. The fresh, invigorating mountain air, treks to the Anamudi, and jeep and elephant safaris through the dense shola forests are the major tourist attractions at the Park.
