Jama Masjid- Delhi

One of the largest prayers halls in India, the Jama Masjid was constructed by Emperor Shah Jahan. It took more than 5000 laborers, artisans and skilled workers to construct this lovely mosque with its delicate looking minarets.

The Jama Masjid is a significant monument as it was frequented by Emperor Shah Jahan and all his courtiers on every Friday for the traditional Jumma prayers. The three gateways that lead to the Jama Masjid Delhi are artistic expressions of Mughal architectural skill. Though the one that guards the eastern entrance to the Jama Masjid Delhi is intricately carved and is higher than the other gateways as it was through this gate that the Emperor and members of the royal family frequented the Jama Masjid.

Three marble domes ornate with black slate stripes sit atop the main Jama Masjid building that is flanked by artistic minarets on two sides. Jama Masjid is an extremely sacred place apart from being of great historic significance as it is believed that a piece from the Prophet's beard is preserved along with copies of Holy Koran in a closet at the North Gate of the grand Jama Masjid Delhi India.

Also known as Masjid-i-Jahanuma, or "the hall of sacred prayer that overlooks the world" Jama Masjid in Delhi India has a massive courtyard that has the capacity to hold about 25,000 devotees at a time. The main prayer hall has several marble domes supported by 260 pillars.

Flights of wide steps made alternately of red sandstone and white marble lead to the gateways at the Jama Masjid Delhi India. The entire mosque is set atop a hill that was known as Bhojala during Shah Jahan's time.
